  1. Identify a professor willing to supervise your work and serve as your dissertation director. Please consult the Faculty of Science website, which includes internal lists of vacant research and teaching assistant positions. There is also a list of research groups available online.
  2. Once you have identified the professor with whom you would like to work, contact him or her directly. If your research project matches the department’s research needs, the professor will inform you if he or she has a spot for a doctoral assistant; you may also be referred to a colleague.
  3. Complete an application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):
    1. Complete the online form 
    2. Put together your enrollment application file 
    3. Put together your doctoral admission file (download and complete a form, and assemble required documents)
    4. Pay the registration fee (if applicable)

Faculty of Medicine

  1. Identify a professor willing to supervise your work and serve as your dissertation director.
  2. Once you have identified the professor with whom you would like to work, contact him or her directly. The professor will inform you if he or she has a spot for a doctoral assistant, or if he or she can refer you to a colleague.
  3. Submit your application file to Ms. Châtelain in the student secretariat. This file should comprise your academic record, a copy of your Medicine or Dental Medicine diploma, any required certified true copies, a qualification certificate from SERI in Bern for European diplomas, a cover letter for diplomas from outside Europe, and a signed and stamped letter from your dissertation director.
  4. Complete an application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):
    1. Complete the online form 
    2. Put together your enrollment application file 
    3. Pay the registration fee (if applicable)

Faculty of Humanities

  1. Identify a professor willing to serve as your dissertation director.
  2. Research and Teaching Assistants at the Faculty enroll through the Admissions Office before registering for the doctorate.
  3. Contact the Academic Advisor for postgraduate studies, Mr. Olivier Frutiger. His mailing address is: Faculté des lettres, 5 rue de Candolle, 1211 Genève 4. He is at Uni Bastions in office A219, Aile Jura, 2nd floor, and is available by telephone from 10am to 12 noon at 022 379 73 13.
  4. Submit your completed application file to him directly. It should comprise:
    • Your CV
    • Copies of your diplomas
    • Transcripts, including French translations if they are in a language other than French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese.
    • The title of your Master’s thesis
    • A dissertation project (2 to 3 pages in length) that has been approved by the expected dissertation director.
    • A brief (approximately 10 lines in length) resume in French of your dissertation project.
  5. If your application is accepted, you will receive a letter from the Assistant Dean of the Faculty.
  6. Complete an application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):

Geneva School of Social Sciences

Geneva School of Economics and Management (GSEM)

PLEASE NOTE: certain doctoral programs at GSEM have specific registration deadlines (e.g., 28 February). Check with the specific program to which you are applying.

  1. Submit an application file to GSEM. It will then be submitted to the scientific committee of your target doctoral program. Further information is available on the GSEM website.
  2. If your application is accepted, as soon as you receive your letter of admission to the doctorate you will need to complete your application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):

    3. Pay the registration fee (if applicable)

Faculty of Law

You have two options:

  • If you are in contact with a professor willing to direct your dissertation, specify this in your cover letter.

        OR

  • Prepare a dissertation prospectus (approximately 10 pages in length) and a bibliography. These will be submitted, along with your academic record, to a professor in the Faculty who might be willing to direct your dissertation.

Next, complete an application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):

  1. Complete the online form
  2. Put together your enrollment application file 
  3. Put together your doctoral admission file (download and complete a form, and assemble required documents)
  4. Pay the registration fee (if applicable) 
  5. Mail your complete application file to the following address:

Nota bene : If you have a contract as a Research and Teaching Assistant with the Faculty, and have not yet submitted your application for enrollment, follow steps 1 to 5 above to do so.

Faculty of Theology

  1. Identify a professor at the Faculty of Theology interested in your research field and willing to serve as your dissertation director;
  2. Contact this professor and submit to him or her a preliminary dissertation project description (one to three pages in length), a CV, and a cover letter;
  3. If he or she shows interest in your research project, ask him or her for a letter indicating that he or she is willing to direct your dissertation (agreement of the professor).
  4. Complete an application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):
    1. Complete the online form
    2. Put together your enrollment application file 
    3. Put together your doctoral admission file (download and complete a form, and assemble required documents, including the letter of agreement of the professor)
    4. Pay the registration fee (if applicable) 
    5. Mail your complete application file to the following address:

Faculty of Translation and Interpreting (FTI)

1. Preliminary step

To determine if one of the professors at the Faculty would be interested in serving as your dissertation director, submit to the Academic Advisor a CV and a preliminary research project (1 to 3 pages in length) succinctly describing the objectives of the research and also indicating which concentration you are interested in (Translation Studies, Translation Technology, Interpreting, or Multilingual Communication Management).

If your preliminary project corresponds to the research interests of one of the professors, the Academic Advisor will forward it to him or her. If the professor expresses interest in the project, you may, with the support of the professor, begin the official procedure to present your application to the College of the Professors.

2. Submit to the Dean's Office an application file comprising the following:

  • a detailed CV in French or in English (dated and signed)
  • a cover letter in French or in English
  • a certified true copy of the diploma from your most advanced degree (*)
  • a simple photocopy of all other diplomas (*)
  • copies of your transcripts (*)
  • a list and copies of publications
  • a detailed presentation of the research project
  • written confirmation from a professor at the Faculty agreeing to direct your doctoral dissertation
  • your personalized doctoral studies program, created jointly with your dissertation director

(*) including translations for all diplomas not written in French, German, English, Italian, or Spanish.

Your application file will be submitted to the Dean's Office, which will submit it for approval by the Faculty’s College of the Professors.

3. If your application is accepted, as soon as you receive your letter of admission as a doctoral student at the FTI, you will need to complete your application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):

  1. Complete the online form
  2. Put together your enrollment application file
  3. Pay the registration fee (if applicable)
  4. Mail your complete application file to the following address:

Nota bene: doctoral dissertations may be written in any of the FTI’s “A” languages (German, English, Arabic, Spanish, French, and Italian).

 

Global Studies Institute (GSI)

  1. Submit to the Institute a dissertation project that has the support of two University of Geneva professors who teach in different academic disciplines. At least one of these professors must be affiliated with the GSI.
  2. Complete an application for enrollment (through the Admissions Office):
