Arrival to Geneva

If you arrive at the airport (Cointrin) you can either take a taxi or a bus to downtown. The airport is at about 6 km (4 miles) from the center of the city where the hotels are located. The taxi will cost you approximately SFr 30 . The bus (number 10) will take you to the Cornavin train station, which is close to the hotels mentionned earlier. The public transport system requires that payment take place prior to boarding the bus or tramway by obtaining a ticket from a machine located at most bus stops. These tickets can be purchased for half an hour, hour or all-day service. The price is SFr 2.20 (you must have the exact change) for one hour, during which you can transfer to any other bus.

You will find foreign exchange counters at both, the airport and the train station. In addition any banking branch has an exchange department. All prices indicated are approximate prices in Swiss Francs. Presently, US$ 1.00 is about SFr 1.20.

Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere in Geneva. American Express and particularly Diner's Club cards are less commonly accepted.

If you are interested in a cheap mode of transportation in the interior of Geneva, you can purchase a 12 multi-journey ticket for SFr 20 at the train station or at most newsstands.

Taxis are relatively expensive in Geneva (as almost anything else) and the pick-up charge is about SFr 7 and SFr 2.70 per km. However the public transportation network is well organized and should be your preferred mean of transportation. Parking facilities exist in the basement of the University, but they are rather expensive.

Almost all destinations in Geneva are within walking distance.

Climate

The weather in Geneva varies a great deal. In principle, we are hoping for nice sunny days with temperatures of 20-30 C (68-86 F) during the day and 15-20 C (59-68 F) at night. However, you should prepare for the possibility of rain and/or cool weather (hopefully not). You can check the weather forecast at Intellicast or alternatively see some satellite images of Europe at Météo France.
