Difficulties associated with migration
Migration is defined as the physical movement of an individual’s habitat from one locality to another. According to Wikipedia, between 185 to 192 million people are affected by voluntary or forced international migration.
Regardless of the nature of the migration, it is always a source of upheaval, loss and of worries. What’s more, the migrant has a vulnerable status and is exposed to stigmatization, intolerance and violation of all sorts of rights.
Trying to describe migration within a few lines represents the risk of having to resort to simplifications that only remotely reflect the complexity of a phenomenon, which is explained by a variety of factors:
- the individual’s characteristics (psychological state, personality, gender, profession, financial resources, marital status, language skills, etc.).
- the reasons for the migration (voluntary or forced) - cultural and geographical distance
- the country’s ability to receive someone, as well as their immigration politics
