Gizeh Becerra est doctorante à l'Université de Genève. Son projet de recherche porte sur la question des violences faites aux femmes: le façonnement du concept en tant que problème politique, l'évolution de sa définition et notre compréhension actuelle de celui-ci dans le domaine internationale. Le projet approfondira également d’autres aspects, tels que l'interaction des acteurs internationaux et la conceptualisation des problèmes sociaux au sein du système des Nations Unies. Plus précisément, l’étude examinera la façon dont les groupes féministes, les experts du genre, les fonctionnaires de l'ONU, et les ONG ont contribué à façonner des normes et des actions portant sur la violence envers les femmes, et l’impact que ceci a eu sur les initiatives de prévention existant aujourd’hui.

Gizeh is a PhD candidate at the University of Geneva. Her doctoral research covers the topic of violence against women (VAW): the creation of the concept as a political problem, the evolution of its definition, and our current understanding of it in the international arena. The research will also delve into the interaction of international actors and problem conceptualization within the UN system; namely, how women’s groups, gender experts, UN officials, and NGOs have collectively shaped VAW norms and how this has influenced existing prevention initiatives.

Thesis (in progress): “Violence against women and international prevention initiatives : an analysis of conceptualization and framing in the United Nations system, co-direction Prof. Marylène LIEBER and Prof. Elisabeth PRÜGL.
Research themes: political construction of social problems, causes of gender violence, dominant and subordinate discourses in politics, prevention of gender based violence, hegemonic masculinity and violence, the impact of framing and problem conceptualization on prevention indicators.
