Welcome to the Laboratory of prehistoric archaeology and anthropology

home

The research activities are based on the scientific heritage of several generations of scholars at the University of Geneva, as Eugène Pittard, Marc-Rodolphe Sauter and Alain Gallay.

Research at the Laboratory of prehistoric archaeology and anthropology, directed by Marie Besse, focuses on the interactions men-environment during late Prehistory – more particularly the Neolithic and the Metal Ages – mainly in Europe, Asia and America. Prehistoric archaeology, but also palaeoanthropology, archaeobotany and archaeozoology are the privileged fields that are investigated in order to approach the technical, economic, social and ideological functioning of past societies. Complete training is provided to the students through lectures, practical classes, seminars, laboratory internships, museum internships, practical fieldwork, analysis of these practices, visits of archaeological sites and museums, personal research work including the master’s thesis... The links between theoretical and practical work are important elements. We indeed support the idea that the constant switch between practical work and theoretical education catalyzes the construction of knowledge.
