A Course for Translators

objectives
To enable practising translators and/or translation students to acquire a reading comprehension of Russian, within strictly defined limits, on an accelerated basis
To be able to assess the content of representative text types and to identify and extract relevant information
To be able to crosscheck translations from Russian into English, assessing accuracy and stylistic appropriateness
audience
Professional translators and revisers at international or other organizations who work with written texts on a daily basis, translating into mother tongue. MA translation students who have completed some technical or specialized translation courses and are interested in acquiring the rudiments of another language for professional use
programme
20 90-minute classes: Overview of Russian grammar, focusing on points presenting special difficulty for English learners • Word formation as the key to reading comprehension • Bureaucratic, diplomatic, legal and technical writing styles in Russian, with special emphasis on the rhetorical organization of texts • Effective use of Russian dictionaries and other reference resources • Trends in the contemporary written language (vocabulary and phraseology, word formation, morphology, syntax) that impact on translation into English
