Our recent Quantum Science and Technology paper on the European quantum technologies flagship programme. Here, we sum up the history leading to the quantum technologies flagship programme and outline its envisioned goals and structure. We also give an overview of the strategic research agenda for quantum communication, which the flagship will pursue during its 10-year runtime

Heralded photon amplification (HPA) is a teleportation-based protocol that has been proposed as a means to overcome transmission loss for DI-QKD. In a recent Quantum Science and Technology paper we show how HPA for path entangled states and characterise the entanglement before and after loss by exploiting a recently developed displacement-based detection scheme.
