  • UP COMING SEMINAR

The GARNET PhD school offers a week long intensive seminary focused on theoretical issues and research methodologies and is based upon active student participation.

The up coming seminar, devoted to the theme of ‘Global Governance & Regionalism: The Role of EU, WTO & International Economic Institutions’, will be held in Geneva between december 3 - 7.

  • TOPIC

In the early 90’s, international relations underwent a renaissance and saw a major proliferation of regionalism. The strengthening of those led to the development of new foreign relations involving regional and international institutions asked to provide an upgraded level of regulation.

The insufficient ability of existing International economic Institutions to manage collective interests by providing solutions to transnational problems underlines the difficulties of global governance. Institutions set up for such tasks (The Bretton Woods Institutions, WTO) are entirely controlled by States and depend on there willingness, while numerous non State actors (transnational companies, NGO, informal groups of States) are substantial players in the global economy. Further, the legitimacy of institutions designed to tackle economic & trade issues for providing global governance is being challenged.

This PhD School aims at studying how international institutions do nevertheless provide governance.
