Founded in 1969, the Institut d'histoire de la Réformation (IHR) is an interfaculty research institute of the University of Geneva; as such, it is under the direction of the University’s Vice-Rector and works in close cooperation with both the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Letters. Its mission is to promote advanced study and research in the history of the ideas, the institutions and the practices of the Reformation, broadly understood from the 15th to the 18th century.The Institute collaborates with other research institutes and faculties in Switzerland and beyond. In addition to the research and instruction of its staff members, the Institute welcomes visiting Ph.D. candidates, interns or researchers, hosts conferences and research seminars chaired by visiting professors, and provides other kind of advanced studies programmes.

It houses within its precincts the Musée Historique de la Réformation et Bibliothèque Calvinienne (MHR), a private foundation established in 1897 that places at its disposition its unique collection of rare books and manuscripts concerning the Calvinist Reformation, in lesser quantities, 17th  and 18th century European protestantism, as well as sponsoring, together with the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research (Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique - FNS), important publication projects such as the correspondence of Théodore de Bèze.
