New agreement ILO-UNIGE
New agreement between ILO and the University of Geneva for the training of interpreters
Prof. Jacques de Werra, vice-rector UNIGE and Mr. Greg Vines, Deputy-Director General ILO
Geneva, May 22, 2017. Today, the International Labour Office and the University of Geneva signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their cooperation in the training of conference interpreting students.
In doing so, they reiterate their continued commitment to a historically strong partnership between two pioneering institutions. The ILO successfully installed, tested and used the world’s first simultaneous interpreting equipment over 90 years ago, while UNIGE set up the world’s first and most successful training program for conference interpreters. It is no coincidence that the founder of today’s FTI was a regular on ILO interpreting teams.
This MOU ensures the continuation of a mutually beneficial collaboration aimed at equipping the conference interpreters of the future with the skills required at the highest levels of multilateral diplomacy.
