Swiss Erasmus: a 'silent' partner until 2010-2011

Switzerland is not an official partner of the ERASMUS programme managed by the European Union.

The principal consequence of this situation is that ERASMUS grants and teaching staff expenses are paid by the Swiss Confederation for both incoming and outgoing students and staff.

There is no need to apply for the Swiss ERASMUS scholarship (CHF 250.-/month in 2009-2010, ca 180 euros): it will be paid upon arrival to eligible students.

Important changes for 2011-2012

As of the academic year 2011/12, Swiss higher education institutions will participate as full members in the activities of the Lifelong Learning Programme LLP. This means that our status will change from that of a ‘silent partner’ to a regular ERASMUS partner from 2011/12 onwards. As a consequence Switzerland will no longer pay the scholarships for your outgoing students doing an exchange at a Swiss university, nor the expenses for your outgoing teaching staff mobility or staff mobility. Therefore it is of greatest importance that you include the University of Geneva on your list of ERASMUS partner institutions to the European Commission as of the academic year 2011/12, in order to receive ERASMUS funds for your outgoing students and staff who will do an exchange at our institution. This will guarantee that your outgoing mobility will be financed by the regular ERASMUS funding.
