The Talloires Network

The Talloires Network is an international association of institutions committed to strenghtening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education.

The Network was founded in 2005, following the Talloires Conference organized in September 2005 by President Lawrence Bacon of Tufts University and the Talloires Declaration on the Civic Roles and Social Responsibilities of Higher Education. The Network has now more than 170 members all around the world.

The Talloires Network believes that higher education institutions do not exist in isolation from society, nor from the communities in which they are located. It envisions universities as a vibrant and dynamic force in their societies, incorporating civic engagement and community service into their research and teaching mission. .

Civic engagement implies strenuous and thoughtful interaction with the non-university world in at least four spheres: in setting universities' aims and priorities; in relating teaching and learning to the wide world; in the continuous dialogue between researchers and practitioners; in taking on fuller responsibilities as neighbors and citizens.
