David Spurr a obtenu son doctorat en littérature comparée à l’Université du Michigan ; il a enseigné aux universités d’Illinois (Chicago) et de Neuchâtel avant d’arriver à Genève. Ses domaines d’enseignement sont la littérature anglaise moderne du 18e au 20e siècles, la théorie littéraire et la littérature comparée. Ses ouvrages scientifiques portent notamment sur la littérature moderne anglaise et française, avec une importance particulière accordée aux rapports entre ces littératures et les contextes philosophiques et culturels de la modernité.
David Spurr est président de la Swiss Association of University Teachers of English et Corresponding Fellow de la English Association of the United Kingdom. Il est membre des comités de direction de la Zurich James Joyce Foundation et de la Société de Lecture de Genève.
