Résumé: First I'll define the Temperley-Lieb algebra and give some of its properties. Then I'll try to convince you that it plays a major role in modern mathematics by describing its role in statistical mechanics and knot theory. If time permits, I'll also talk a bit about number theory
and Coxeter groups.
