European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST)

COST funds pan-European, multi- and interdisciplinary, bottom-up networks of researchers across all science and technology fields. Established in 1971, it is the longest-running European framework supporting transnational cooperation in this domain. COST does not fund research itself, but provides support for networking activities carried out within so-called ‘COST Actions,’ which are active through a range of networking tools such as meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSMs) and dissemination activities.

Researchers are also entitled to submit research projects within existing COST Actions. The research project is funded at the national level and has to be embedded in an eligible COST Action.

COST Actions have a duration of four years. The average budget depends on the number of COST countries participating in the Action; the financial support averages EUR 130,000 per year. Any researcher from a legal entity (universities, UAS, research institutions, NGO as well as – to a smaller extent – industry or SME) based in a COST member country may apply for funding. Switzerland is a (founding) COST member country and Switzerland-based scientists are fully eligible to all COST activities.

> See Euresearch infosheet

Swiss COST Projects funded by SNSF must be carried out within the framework of an ongoing COST Action to which Switzerland participates. The project must be integrated into the COST network through active participation, and this must be outlined in the project application. The recipients of the financial contribution (leading doctoral students, postdoctoral students, researchers) must be enrolled in or employed by a Swiss higher education institution, research institute or company. The project duration may not exceed the Action duration. The maximum amount of funding which SNSF allocates to a four-year project does not exceed CHF 320,000.
