Né à Genève le 12 août 1946, Jean-Dominique Vassalli a obtenu son diplôme fédéral de médecin à l’Université de Genève en 1972, son doctorat ès sciences (PhD) à la Rockefeller University en 1977 puis son doctorat en médecine à l’Université de Genève en 1984. En 1991, Jean-Dominique Vassalli est nommé vice-doyen de la Faculté de médecine, charge qu'il assume jusqu'en 1999. Il est alors nommé vice-recteur de l'Université de Genève. Il occupera cette fonction jusqu'en 2003. Il  a notamment été en charge des dossiers relatifs à la collaboration Vaud-Genève et à la valorisation des découvertes scientifiques. De 2004 au 14 juillet 2007, il a présidé la Section de médecine fondamentale de la Faculté de médecine.

Born in Geneva, Jean-Dominique Vassalli obtained his Swiss Federal Diploma of Medicine at the University of Geneva in 1972 and his PhD at Rockefeller University in 1977. In 1984, he obtained his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Geneva. In 1986, he became professor of developmental biology in the Faculty of Medicine. In 1994, he was appointed Vice Dean of the Faculty of medicine until 1999. He subsequently was nominated Vice-Rector for the University of Geneva until 2003, and oversaw the technology transfer and Vaud-Geneva collaboration programs. He then presided the Basic Medical Sciences Section of the Faculty of Medicine and was appointed Rector of the University of Geneva in 2007.
