Investigating the source of volcano acoustic signals

Low frequency acoustic signals (infrasound) have been largely used to monitor volcanic activity in real-time and from remote stations. However, only few studies have investigated the relationship between the source of volcano infrasound and the actual volcanic fluid dynamics. A novel analysis of the volcano infrasonic source by means of numerical simulation with the Lattice Boltzmann Method highlights the limits present in the traditional interpretation of the volcano acoustics for the retrieval of key eruption source parameters.
