Transylvania - 2006

Porphyry Cu-Au, skarn and epithermal deposits: Banat, Apuseni Mts. and Eastern Carpathians in Transylvania (Romania)

Within the framework of an European SEG Student Chapter collaboration a successful Ore Deposit Field Trip to Transylvania (Romania) was carried out from October 5th to 14th, 2006. The event was initiated by the SEG Student Chapters of the University of Geneva and the ETH Zürich (both from Switzerland), with an active participation of the SEG Student Chapters from Budapest (ELTE, Hungary) and Cluj-Napoca (UBB, Romania). The group consisted of 32 people from all four Chapters (Master and PhD students oriented in economic geology, post-docs and Chapter sponsors).

The main goal of the field trip was to look at some of Europe's biggest copper and gold deposits and to discuss their origin scenarios by looking at veins, alterations and textural relations. A particular emphasis was made in understanding the porphyry to epithermal transitions. The trip started and ended in Budapest (Hungary), and followed a route through the famous mining districts of Romania: Banat, Apuseni Mountains, Eastern Carpathians and Baia Mare District.

A detailed report, prepared by the ETH Zurich SEG Student Chapter members, on the trip can be found in the 2007 January SEG Newsletter and on the SEG website.
