PhD project (started 2010) - Supervised by Dr. Massimo Chiaradia

Geochronological and petrologic evolution of the Coroccohuayco magmatic system and its role in the formation of the associated Cu-Au skarn and porphyry mineralization, Tintaya cluster, southern Peru. SNF funded project.

I’m currently investigating the apparent link that many porphyry related deposits have with the adakite-like signature of their intrusive rocks. I’m focussing on a detailed study of the intrusive suite at the Coroccohuayco Cu-skarn deposit located in the Eocene-Oligocene Andahuaylas-Yauri belt of southern Peru (Tintaya Cluster). In order to carry out this project I’m using a wide range of analytical techniques including U-Pb dating of zircons and titanites by LA-ICP-MS and TIMS, 40Ar/39Ar dating, Re-Os dating, geochemistry and isotopes (Sr, Nd, Pb) of rocks and minerals (XRF, LA-ICP-MS, TIMS, microprobe). In detail I'm focussing on:

  • The longevity of the magmatic cycle and of the associated hydrothermal system through U-Pb dating of zircons (LA-ICP-MS and ID-TIMS), and magmatic and hydrothermal titanites (ID-TIMS) and Re-Os dating of molybdenites.
  • The petrologic evolution of the magmatic system using whole rock geochemistry (XRF and LA-ICP-MS) combined with petrography and mineral geochemistry (Microprobe and LA-ICP-MS).
  • Insight into petrologic evolution from zircons and titanites chemitry, texture and Hf isotopes.
  • The "specialization" of high Sr/Y magmas in term of metals, volatiles and oxidation state.

  • The use of zircon chemistry as a proxy to infer the relative oxidation state of magmas.
