PhD opportunity at the University of Geneva, Switzerland

The Mineralogy Department of the Section of Earth Sciences, University of Geneva, requests applications for a funded postgraduate (PhD) position to use geochronological and thermochronological tools to investigate the Triassic to early Cretaceous tectonic history of rocks exposed in the northern Andes (Ecuador and Colombia). This time period spans between the fragmentation of Pangea, continental arc magmatism, and the accretion of an intra-oceanic arc. The project is funded for a period of 2 years (extendable to 4 years, depending on performance) by the Swiss National Science Foundation. We invite people with a BSc. (hons; 1st class or 2-1), MSc. or equivalent degree in Earth Sciences, to apply. Potential candidates must be able to communicate in English, and knowledge of French and some Spanish would be an advantage, but is not mandatory. The candidate will start on the 1st April, 2009.

The University of Geneva, as part of the ELSTE community (Earth Science sections of the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva), offers state-of-the-art analytical facilities for isotope geochemistry, geochronology and thermochronology (LA-ICP-MS, TIMS, noble gas MS, fission-track analysis). For a more detailed description: http://www.unige.ch/sciences/terre/mineral/

Applications (including a CV, list of referees, and a statement about your career plan) are to be sent to Dr. Richard Spikings (richard.spikings@unige.ch)
