Volcanic Petrology and 40Ar/39Ar Geochronology
The Department of Mineralogy seeks applicants for two positions which could begin as early as November 1, 1998. Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral experience and publication records. Both individuals will be expected to contribute to ongoing research programs in: (1) caldera-related volcanism and (2) the origin and evolution of calc-alkaline magmas, and eventually should initiate complementary research projects. Responsibilities include operation and maintenance of laboratories and some teaching, which will be divided among the candidates based on their expertise and interests. Salaries will vary depending on experience and duties. Initial appointments are for two years, but these posts may be continued up to five and six years on the basis of performance.
Volcanic Petrology: Candidates should have a strong background in major and trace element/isotopic modeling of magma differentiation, preferably in calc-alkaline systems, and an interest in integrating petrographic and mineral chemistry constraints in magma evolution models. A Nomarski DIC microscopy laboratory and image processing system, to aid in studies of plagioclase textures and zoning, is available, as is access to a wide variety of analytical instruments. Principal research targets are multiple suites of related lavas from Volcán Tatara-San Pedro (Chilean Andes) that can be investigated in detail in the context of a wealth of existing geochemical, age, and geologic data. Should the position be renewed, new initiatives will be encouraged.
Geochronology: The Department of Mineralogy operates a 40Ar/39Ar facility dedicated to high-precision dating of young volcanic rocks and ore deposits. This laboratory includes a MAP 216 mass spectrometer, and a partially automated ultra-low blank extraction line integrated with a furnace and a dual laser microprobe (UV and CO2). We seek candidates with experience in dating volcanic rocks, the ability to maintain and improve the laboratory, a desire to collaborate with students and colleagues, and the capacity to generate innovative projects that exploit the lab's capabilities (e.g., paleoclimatology or paleomagnetism).
