Geological RisksThe Faculty of Sciences, University of Geneva, Switzerland, announces a position at the level of either Full Professor or tenured Associate Professor (Professeur ordinaire ou adjoint) in the Department of Mineralogy. We seek an accomplished scientist and teacher with experience in the application of physical volcanology to geological risks, specifically with the capacity to integrate eruption dynamics with the assessment and mitigation of volcanic hazards (explosive or otherwise). A field-based program integrating observations and fluid dynamic modeling of active volcanic systems is a desired component, as is the development of working relationships that would provide educational and collaborative research opportunities for students at volcano observatories.
The new Professor will assume responsibility for the direction of the "Centre d'Etude des Risques Géologiques (CERG)", which is attached to the Section of Earth Sciences, and of the annual course organized by the CERG. The successful candidate will also teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geological risk assessment, physical volcanology, fluid dynamics applied to a wide range of geological processes, and an introductory undergraduate course in the structure and dynamics of the solid Earth. Developing a funded research program, supervising Masters and PhD theses, and teaching in French within 12 months of arrival are essential.
The Earth Science programs in Geneva (www.unige.ch/sciences/terre) and at the University of Lausanne have merged to form the École Lémanique des Sciences de la Terre et de l'Environnement (ELSTE). This organization offers joint graduate teaching and shares laboratory facilities.
Degree requirements: PhD or equivalent. Starting Date: 1 October, 2004, or as agreed.
