Jaime de Melo est à l'Université de Genève depuis 1993. Auparavant, il a enseigné à l'Université de Georgetown aux Etats Unis (1976-80) avant de joindre la Banque Mondiale où il y a occupé plusieurs postes dans le département de recherche. Il a contribué au développement et à l'application des modèles d'équilibre général calculables et a dirigé la recherche sur l'analyse des politiques commerciales. Sa recherche récente porte sur la relation entre régionalisme et multilatéralisme et sur la relation entre politiques commerciales et politiques migratoires. Il travaille également sur les liens entre commerce et environnement. Il a dirigé de 2005 à 2010 la World Bank Economic Review.
