The Institute is actively involved in research in economic history with a particular emphasis on comparative and international economic history.

External funds, for example grants awarded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), contribute to the role of the Institute staff and faculty in historical research. Members of the Institute, as well as PhD students, present regularly their preliminary results during the staff workshop. Moreover, since 1970, the research seminar of the Institute has brought many prominent social and economic historians to Geneva. The breadth of the themes discussed in its regular sessions is a testimony to the manifold facets of economic history as a field of intellectual inquiry.

The Institute is a full member of the Maison de l'histoire, the University of Geneva consortium for historical research, and participates in the Programme doctoral en histoire contemporaine (PDHC), the Western Switzerland doctoral program in contemporary history.

Des fonds externes, par exemple les subsides octroyés par le Fonds national suisse pour la recherche scientifique (FNS) nourrissent l'implication importante des membres de l'institut dans la recherche fondamentale en histoire. Le workshop du staff permet un échange régulier sur les recherches et les thèses en cours. Depuis 1970, le séminaire avancé de recherche de l'Institut a accueilli à Genève de nombreux et éminents spécialistes de l'histoire économique et sociale. La diversité des thèmes abordés durant les sessions de ce séminaire témoignent des dimensions multiples de l'histoire économique

L'Institut est membre à part entière de la Maison de l'Histoire, centre inter-facultaire regroupant toutes les unités d'histoire de l'Université de Genève, et participe aux activités du programme doctoral en histoire contemporaine (PDHC).
