GPL: The Graphics Programming Language
SPSS implements the GPL programming language for graphics (GPL),
as defined by Leland Wilkinson in his landmark book .
When using the or Graphboard templates, you are in fact using a front-end
to that language (you might have noticed - if you had a look at the commands the Chart Builder
generated). GPL is a language capable to express in general terms all forms of statistical graphs.
To learn more about GPL, as implemented in SPSS, see:
- The GGRAPH command in the manual.
- The SPSS GPL reference guide ().
- To get a general idea of how GPL looks like, you might also create
any graph using the and
then Paste the commands to syntax window.
Some of the graphboard examples show the GPL code.
- Check SPSS Forums
form the SPSS menu.

examples showing the power of GPL in SPSS: Look for blog entries on Visualization, SPSS and
