Overview and objectives

The Bachelor of Arts in Multilingual Communication programme provides the basic training necessary to prepare students for future studies in translation, interpretation, and other advanced degree programmes in the field of multilingual communication. This three-year course is made up of ten modules (120 Kb, ) whose content provides theoretical and practical knowledge in a wide range of areas, including translation, communication, language technologies and linguistics. The curriculum also puts strong emphasis on foreign language proficiency and the development of analytical and writing techniques in the active language.

Opportunities for graduates

Students who complete a Bachelor of Arts in Multilingual Communication may go on to do a Master of Arts in Translation, a Master of Arts in Interpreting, or other Masters in the communication field. Graduates specialise in a variety of areas, including translation, public relations, the media, tourism, etc.

Curriculum

180 ECTS credits, allocated as follows:

Required courses:

• 120 credits distributed among the following areas: translation, A language, B languages, information technologies and working methods, intercultural communication and specialised communication
• 30 credits to be earned at another university in Switzerland or abroad

Optional courses:

• 30 credits earned at the FTI (under the “Languages and Language Technologies” module) and/or at other faculties at the University of Geneva (Electives module) or at another university in Switzerland or abroad

The programme begins every year in the autumn and lasts 6 semesters. Courses are given in the languages of the student’s chosen combination, and in French (or in English, in a few cases).

Mobility and exchanges

In keeping with its tradition of cultural awareness and international outreach, the FTI encourages the mobility of its students and teachers. The Faculty has signed exchange agreements with more than seventy universities around the world, either within the framework of Erasmus programmes or on a bilateral basis.
