This year NCCR SwissMAP launched its first PhD & Postdoc video competition open to NCCR members. The competition aimed not only to show-case the researcher’s work but also to demystify the Mathematics of Physics and to make it accessible to non-specialist audiences.

Mathematics researchers are often asked the question: “So, what’s your PhD or research about?” The idea and the challenge of the competition was for participants to present their work through interesting and fun videos for both, researchers and general public.

The 2019 SwissMAP PhD & Postdoc video competition winner of the second prize was Nikita Nikolaev who is a Postdoctoral Researcher at UNIGE (A. Alekseev’s Group), in his eight minute video Abelianisation of Differential Equations, he explains a new method to understand differential equations using ideas form geometry. The video is a novel and exciting way to explain abstract concepts at the cutting edge of mathematical research.

The competition winner was Ofir David (UZH). In his video Researching the mathematics of billiard tables, he explains what a mathematical research problem is and what separates it from a standard homework problem.

Le pôle de recherche national SwissMAP a lancé cette année son premier concours de vidéos. Ouverte à tous les doctorants et post-doctorants du pôle de recherche, cette compétition a mieux faire connaître leurs travaux tout en démystifiant les mathématiques de la physique et en les rendant plus accessible à un large public.

Post-doctorant à l’UNIGE, Nikita Nikolaev a remporté la deuxième place du concours, avec sa vidéo traitant de l’abélianisation des équations différentielles et d’une nouvelle approche consistant à aborder ces équations par le biais de la géométrie.

Post-doctorant à l’Université de Zurich, Ofir David a remporté quant à lui la première place avec une vidéo sur l’utilisation des mathématiques pour comprendre ce qui se déroule sur une table de billard.
