Fields Medal winners received by the Federal Chambers

Tuesday, September 27, was a special day for the winners of the Fields Medal 2022. Professor Hugo Duminil-Copin (Faculty of Science/UNIGE) and Professor Maryna Viazovska (EPFL) were invited to the Federal Parliament by the presidents of the Committees on Science, Education and Culture, Benedikt Würth (Councillor of the States) and Fabien Fivaz (National Councillor).

Greeted from the rostrum of the National Council by President Irène Kälin and during the session of the Council of States by First Vice-President Brigitte Häberli-Koller, the two laureates then spoke with the parliamentarians about their respective careers in mathematics. Accompanied by the rector and the vice-dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the UNIGE, as well as the president of the EPFL, the two scientists recalled the importance of fundamental research, of the collaboration between the two universities in Lake Geneva, of competitive financing and of the next generation of academics for the future of our country.

Hugo Duminil-Copin joined the University of Geneva in 2008 to do his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Stanislav Smirnov, himself a Fields Medal winner in 2010.

Hugo Duminil-Copin and Maryna Viazovska are both members of the NCCR SwissMap, an interdisciplinary research network, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, at the crossroads of mathematics and theoretical physics.
