The University of Geneva negotiates agreements with publishers in order to offer advantageous conditions of publication in Open Access for the institution's researchers identified as corresponding author. You will find below, in alphabetical order of publisher, an overview of the current deals and, where applicable, their terms and conditions.

The agreement covers an annual quota for all Swiss academic institutions:

  • 138 articles in 2023 (estimated coverage: 24% of Swiss publications)
  • 177 articles in 2024 (estimated coverage: 31% of Swiss publications)
  • 216 articles in 2025 (estimated coverage: 38% of Swiss publications)

Once the quota is reached, a reduced APC of $3000 applies (see "partial coverage of publication costs" below).

All types of articles are covered except the following: additions, corrections or editorials.

Articles published in the framework of SNSF-funded projects are excluded from the agreement but are eligible for a reduced APC of $3,000 (see "partial coverage of publication costs" below).

Yearly Quota

The agreement speficy an annual amount of money devoted to publication costs for all Swiss academic institutions. It is estimated that this will cover :

  • 2021 (8 months) : ~1'000 articles [80 left, as of 13.12.2021]
  • 2022 : ~ 1'100 articles [quota exhausted as of 21.09.2022] 
  • 2023 : ~ 1'200 articles
  • 2024 : ~ 1'350 articles

Only articles accepted after 1st May 2021 are eligible and for which the corresponding author is affiliated to our institution.

Date of acceptance for publication by the journal is considered with regards to the quota.

The University Rectorate has set up a central fund to cover part of the cost of publishing (Article Processing Charges or APCs) in Gold Open Access journals, or for books and books chapters that follow similar principles. Since 2018

Conditions

The fund can only be used on a subsidiary basis to the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and never covers charges linked with publishing in hybrid journals. All details and allocation critera are listed on the request application form page.
