Otto Bruun

Senior Advisor at SwissCore

I am currently Senior Advisor for Innovation and Deputy Head of Office at SwissCore, the Swiss liaison office to the European Union for education, research and innovation. My daily work is varied, and involves informing Swiss policy-makers on developments in EU research and innovation policy, advocating for Swiss priorities and interests in ongoing EU policy developments, representing Innosuisse, SNSF, and swissuniversities in relevant EU policy fora, as well as driving strategic initiatives to strengthen Switzerland’s position in European R&I.

I would not have found my way to SwissCore if I had not had the valuable experience of working at CISA.

As my initial goal was to have an academic research career, this has been an unexpected journey. After my work at CISA, I moved into entrepreneurship in the private sector. When I ultimately came to miss the excitement of engaging with leading-edge science, I seized the opportunity at SwissCore, which allows me to work on science policy and science diplomacy in a highly “entrepreneurial” environment. SwissCore advisors are given great autonomy, in taking leadership of initiatives and contributing to strategic decisions on policy priorities.

The CISA leadership empower individual researchers […] in encouraging them to break new ground in their research

I would not have found my way to SwissCore if I had not had the valuable experience of working at CISA. Both the skills acquired there and the experience as a participant in a large interdisciplinary research programme have proved important. The CISA leadership empower individual researchers both in encouraging them to break new ground in their research, but also in supporting alumni who strike out on new career paths. I encourage young PhD students and post-docs to explore opportunities in science policy and science diplomacy where their research skills are highly valued.
