Emotion studies in classics and Medieval literatures are in full bloom. The recent explosion of interest in the pre-modern history of emotions, however, is the result of a long process, going back to early 20th century linguistic studies. This paper will offer a survey of the most recent developments in the study of the emotions in the fields of Greek and Byzantine literatures, showing how these new trends emerged from previous research. Attention will be devoted to the mutual interactions with other fields of research such as psychology, philosophy, sociology. Finally the paper will present some research questions on pre-modern emotions that are still open.
