Regard critique sur l’esprit critique
Mon projet FNS Doc.CH porte sur l’esprit critique. De nombreux chercheurs pensent que former à l’esprit critique est indispensable dans la lutte contre les fake news, les théories du complot ou les croyances irrationnelles. Cependant, cette notion présente de sérieux problèmes conceptuels. Il n’existe pas, par exemple, de définition de ce concept qui fasse consensus. Ce flou génère certains malentendus qui peuvent produire des effets indésirables — comme une méfiance envers les autorités scientifiques, induite par un scepticisme excessif. L’enjeu de ce projet est d’analyser l’esprit critique de manière critique, afin d’identifier les risques associés à l’utilisation de ce concept.
Thinking critically about critical thinking
My SNSF Doc.CH project deals with critical thinking. Many researchers believe that critical thinking training is an indispensable element in the fight against fake news, conspiracy theories or irrational beliefs. However, this notion presents serious conceptual problems. For example, there is a plethora of definitions of critical thinking and no consensus among them. This vagueness generates certain misunderstandings that can induce undesirable effects – such as a distrust of scientific authorities, due to excessive skepticism. The challenge of this project is to undertake a critical analysis of critical thinking in order to determine what risks are associated with the use of this concept.
