University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

School of Social & Political Science

Edinburgh's vibrant and stimulating environment is the perfect place for your postgraduate study and research. The University of Edinburgh is a leading University internationally, in both research and teaching, with an immense breadth and depth of opportunities for postgraduate study.

The MSc/Diploma in Childhood Studies is an intensive interdisciplinary degree (offered over 1 year full time and 2 years part time). The degree is both academically rigorous and practically useful for policy and practice. The rights, welfare and well-being of children have become internationally-recognised priorities. This degree equips students to contribute to their development and delivery.

In this programme, you develop advanced understandings of childhood theory, policy and research. Childhood Studies addresses children and young people aged 18 or under, following the international human rights instrument the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We specialise in learning about children's human rights and how to involve children in research meaningfully and ethically.

The degree is highly customisable. Following a core component, you can then choose from a suite of courses covering a wide range of topics – from human rights and international development, to education, health, and youth crime. We specialise in research skills, and particularly how to involve children and young people meaningfully and ethically in research and participation activities.
The MSc is recognised as the initial research training for a PhD.

With these skills, graduates go onto employment in national and international non-governmental organisations, roles within government and children’s services, research posts and PhD study.
