University of Geneva moves up three places in the Shanghai Ranking

The University of Geneva (UNIGE) has risen from 58th to 55th place in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking, compared with last year. This is the institution’s third-best result ever, after its 49th-place ranking in 2023 and 53rd place in 2016.

In Switzerland, UNIGE ranks third, behind ETH Zurich (19th) and EPFL (43rd). It is therefore the country’s top comprehensive university, ahead of the University of Zurich (65th) and the University of Basel (91st).

The Shanghai Ranking is one of the world’s most prestigious university rankings. It places particular emphasis on the experimental and medical sciences. UNIGE’s rise therefore highlights the excellence of the research carried out in these fields. Unlike other university rankings, the Shanghai Ranking does not take into account data submitted by the institutions themselves, nor surveys that tend to favour Anglo-Saxon universities with greater name recognition, regardless of more objective indicators such as research performance.

“The University’s progress is excellent news,” says UNIGE Rector Audrey Leuba. “It is a strong indicator of the commitment and quality of the work carried out by our researchers. It also recognises the efforts made across our academic community to support research and diversify sources of funding, in a challenging budgetary context.”
