Marco G.P. Hessels studied Clinical Special Education at Utrecht University, The Netherlands and obtained his PhD from that same university in 1993. Before coming to Geneva, Switzerland, he worked as a researcher at Utrecht University (1987-1991) and as a researcher and later assistant professor at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (1991-2000).

Currently, he is professor of special education at the University of Geneva, Switzerland and extraordinary professor in the Optentia Research Focus Area on the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University, Vanderbijlpark, South-Africa. His research focuses on learning capacity, metacognitive interventions, socio-adaptive competences and social participation and inclusion.

Marco Hessels is President of the International Association for Cognitive Education and Psychology (IACEP) and member of the scientific board of the European Conference on Psychological Theory and Research on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ECIDD). He is a member of the EARLI Special Interest Group 15: Special Educational Needs , the EERA Network 4: Inclusive Education and the Austrian Association of Research and Development in Education (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Forschung und Entwicklung im Bildungswesen, ÖFEB). He regularly participates in the German speaking Workgroup Empirical Special Education Research (Arbeitsgruppe Empirische Sonderpädagogische Forschung, AESF).

Marco is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology, Associate Editor of Learning Disabilities: A Contemporary Journal and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Educational Psychology.
