New flow field-flow fractionation multi-detection platform for expanding the frontiers in environmental biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology

Dr. Isabelle Worms is testing the new platform performance.

Thanks to SNF R’equip funding and the support from the University of Geneva and la Société académique de Genève new environmental flow field-flow fractionation multi-detection platform (F4-MD) has been acquired by the laboratory of Environmental biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology, led by Prof. Vera Slaveykova, and installed in the ICP center of the University of Geneva. This state-of-the-art instrumentation combines universal and modular flow field-flow fractionation with multiple detection units including diode array absorbance, fluorescence and differential refractive index detectors, multi-angle light scattering and dynamic light scattering modules. It is coupled on-line with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. F4-MD provides multiplex information in a single run on the natural and engineered nanoparticles, nanoplastics, inorganic and organic colloids, bio-particles, biopolymers, as well as the associated trace metals in complex environmental and biological settings. It opens novel avenues towards the development of new research directions beyond the current state of knowledge in environmental biogeochemistry and ecotoxicology at nano-scale.
