Bio-based plastics (BPs), produced from renewable biomass sources, may contribute to lowering greenhouse gases and the demand for fossil resources. However, their environmental fate is not well understood in terms of biodegradation. Bacterial-plastic interactions have been recognized as the first stage in a slow biodegradation process, during which bacteria may excrete enzymes that break down the plastics. The biodegradation process will determine the eventual fate of the plastic in the environment. Here, three BPs, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polylactic acid (PLA), and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) were used for investigating the early-stage attachment on natural freshwater bacterial communities. We aimed to elucidate whether the different materials will attract specific microbial populations, which could have particular consequences regarding the fate of each BPs in the lab and in-situ conditions.
