The payment of the registration fees can be made in several installments. If registration fees are not paid before the beginning of the course, access to the programme will not be allowed.
The Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies can only offer a very limited number of educational scholarships for living expenses and only according to predetermined criteria. Therefore, candidates are strongly encouraged to search for financial support on their own and as early as possible. The scholarships do not include VISA and transport costs in Geneva.
Candidates eligible for a scholarship are residents from and work in one of the countries designated in the DAC List of ODA Recipients either as “least developed”, “other low income”, or “lower middle income”. For more info, please check our website: www.cerahgeneve.ch.
Objectives
At the end of the Master, students will be able to critically analyse the humanitarian sector through a good understanding of the concepts of humanitarian action and the use of management and strategy tools to develop, coordinate and evaluate humanitarian projects and responses.
Audience
Professional from other sectors who wishes to deepen his understanding of the contemporary humanitarian action
Post-graduate student with internship experience who wants to work in humanitarian action
Learning outcomes
- Analyse and critically review major humanitarian crises, past and present, as well as future challenges, from an interdisciplinary perspective
- Use specialised problem-solving skills integrating knowledge on humanitarian crises acquired throughout the courses
- Develop creative and flexible procedures to solve problems
- Formulate and defend an argument taking into account ethical issues and humanitarian principles
- Take responsibility in challenging and moving contexts by formulating and implementing appropriate, coherent, flexible and creative strategies
- Demonstrate leadership and innovation in managing programmes, projects and teams
- Enhance self-management in a stressful and demanding environment, identifying one’s own strengths and limitations
Programme
The Master programme is a modular executive training of 60 ECTS credits composed of four terms:
Term One: Quality Management of Humanitarian Projects
(Certificate of Advanced studies: 10 ECTS Credits)
Duration: 11.5 weeks of online study (14 September – 4 December, 2020)
This course addresses the essential components that guarantee the qualitative management of adapted projects and cohesive teams. It integrates fundamental principles such as inclusion, do no harm, accountability or participation into processes, methods and tools of project and people management.
Term Two: Critical Analysis of Humanitarian Action
(Diploma of Advanced Studies: 25 ECTS Credits)
Duration: 10 weeks (18 January – 26 March, 2021) in Geneva
- Module 1: Humanitarianisms
- Module 2: Contexts, Actions and Consequences
- Module 3: Revisiting Vulnerability and Needs
- Module 4: Humanitarian Governance, Norms and Principles
- Module 5: The Humanitarians
Term Three: Key approaches in humanitarian responses and contexts
(Certificate of Advanced Studies: 10 ECTS Credits)
Duration: one week for each course, between April and June 2021.
The third term offers a series of short elective courses focusing on key approaches and evaluative tools of humanitarian contexts. Students can select five courses to develop specific skills and learn about good practices. The elective courses include:
- Participatory Approaches with Crisis-Affected Communities
- Designing an Advocacy Strategy for Humanitarian Action
- Media and Humanitarian Action
- Non-communicable Diseases in Humanitarian Contexts
- Climate emergency and its impacts on Health
- Negotiation in Humanitarian Crises
- Protection in Humanitarian Action
- Sexual and Reproductive Health in Humanitarian Crises
- Livelihood and Cash Transfer Interventions in Humanitarian Action
- Health Systems Assessment in Humanitarian Crises
Term four: Workshops and dissertation (15 ECTS Credits)
Dissertation to include:
- A series of 14 online workshops organised from September 2020 to January 2021 to help students design their dissertation project (5 ECTS credits).
- MAS dissertation for August 2021 (10 ECTS credits).

Admission criteria
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent university degree, plus a minimum of five years of work experience in the humanitarian, social or development sector
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent university degree, plus a valuable internship experience
- Hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent university degree, plus a minimum of two years of work experience in the humanitarian, social or development sector
- Excellent command of English. Students whose mother tongue is not English, who do not have secondary or post-secondary qualifications taught in English or who have not spent a minimum of one year studying full-time at a university level in English (please provide transcripts certifying that courses were delivered in English), must provide a certificate to prove their mastery of English (proof such a TOEFL/IELTS/CPE/CAE Certificate).
