The world of translation has been transformed by corpora (monolingual and parallel), Good dictionaries are corpus-based, Google Translate and other Machine Translation systems all use corpus methods, and translation memories are parallel corpora by another name. The contemporary translator needs a full and rich understanding of what corpora have to offer, both for indirect use (via dictionaries and translation systems) and for direct use. The Sketch Engine is a leading corpus tool with many corpora (monolingual and parallel, for sixty languages) ready-loaded and directly usable. Users can also install their own corpora. It supports parallel concordances, keyword and term extraction, and 'word sketches', one-page summaries of a word's grammatical and collocational behaviour. Word sketches have been in use for dictionary-making for a decade now. We have recently developed 'bilingual word sketches'. The talk will demonstrate how the Sketch Engine can support translators, with examples from a range of languages and language pairs, People bringing laptops or tablets to the talk will be able to follow the talk online, making their own versions of the searches I show, as they see fit; for this it will be good to register in advance, at http://www.sketchengine.co.uk
