Intralingual and Interlingual Term Circulation in Medical TV Series: Analysing Medical Terms in English-Chinese Subtitles of The Good Doctor

Xuan Li is a PhD candidate in the Department of Translation Technology (TIM) at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting since 2024. Before joining TIM, Xuan worked in technical project management in the manufacturing industry and completed a six-month terminology and translation internship at the World Meteorological Organization (Geneva). Academically, she has published on terminology translation in Chinese localisation contexts and completed an MA dissertation in Nanjing, China — an empirical study on reader reception of terminology translation in a science fiction. She continues to explore terminology in fictional contexts within her doctoral research. Her research examines term circulation and terminological variation between expert and lay discourse in audiovisual media, with a case study on a medical TV series. Using a corpus-based, tool-assisted methodology, she investigates how medical terminology travels from specialist discourse into TV subtitles, and how terms shift in translation.
