I am Professor of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Geneva and Head of the German Unit. I hold a Diploma in Translation and an MA in Psychology from the University of Geneva, as well as a PhD in French Linguistics from Stockholm University. I teach audiovisual translation, research methods in translation studies, and translation theory. I have designed, taught and organised numerous continuing professional development courses in audiovisual translation and accessibility. Until 2007, I also worked as a freelance subtitler, translator, and translation reviser. My working languages are German, French, Swedish, and English. My research focuses on audiovisual translation, with a particular emphasis on subtitling studies. I have developed a model for the analysis of interlingual subtitles based on subtitlers’ quality perceptions; conducted a time-lag study on subtitling professionals’ working conditions and job satisfaction; examined subtitling workflows in an in-situ study at a bilingual television station in Switzerland; and conducted a project assessing the potential of integrating didactic subtitling into French-language education in German-speaking Switzerland. The findings of my research, which has been supported by external funding, have been disseminated through international journals, a co-edited handbook on audiovisual translation, a podcast series, invited talks, as well as MA courses and continuing professional development courses. In addition, I have supervised numerous theses in audiovisual translation and am currently supervising two PhD dissertations in the field. I serve as Editor-in-Chief of the translation studies journal Parallèles and as co-founder of the book series Audiovisual Translation Studies, published by Frank & Timme.
