Abstract

We discuss recent experiments (in collaboration with University of Lille) on the formation and propagation of dispersive shock waves in nonlinear fiber optics. In particular we address the role of dispersive shocks in the so-called Riemann problem, i.e., the evolution of step-like initial data, which encompasses many case studies in fluidodynamics, like the dam-breaking problem for water waves or the piston problem in gas dynamics. We discuss analogies and important differences with these phenomena.
