The GMP Photonics second prize was awarded by General Microtechnology & Photonics (GMP) to Alberto Boaron and Davide Rusca for their experimental and theoretical work on quantum key distribution, under the direction of Prof. Hugo Zbinden. Intended to encourage and motivate young scientists to carry out or continue research in technologies such as photonics and microtechnology, the GMP Photonics prize was awarded for the 5th time, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the company.

The Quantum Technologies group is part of the Open European Quantum Key Distribution Testbed project, which has just started. A test quantum communication infrastructure will be set up in several European countries, including in Geneva Switzerland. The aim is to boost the security of critical applications in various fields – from telecommunications to electricity supply and healthcare.

Our recent demonstration of a secret key exchange over a record distance of 421 km of optical fibre has been published in PRL as an Editor's suggestion as well as being featured in Physics Viewpoint. We push the limits to new heights by optimising all parts of the QKD system including increasing the generation rate of the quantum states to reach 2.5 GHz and high performance single-photon detectors developed in-house, which have very high efficiency and low noise. The Quantum Technologies group at the University of Geneva QFlag will play a key role to support and coordinate the activities of the Quantum Flagship - the initial selected projects, and the quantum community at large - into the world-leading success that all stakeholders would like it to be – this will assist both the science to evolve as well as gathering and triggering the stakeholders to liberate quantum technologies from the lab and turn it into commercially successful products.
