Katia Vladimirova, senior GEDT research associate, will present her work during the next GEDT seminar on Wednesday the 30th of March from 12h15 to 13h45 (online). Her presentation will explore discourses about fashion, sustainability, and well-being on Instagram, a photo-sharing app owned by Facebook.

Instagram has become a source of information and knowledge for many of its users, with growing communities of interest sharing their experiences and advice in a relatable and conversational format. Instagram may be a playground for emerging social change; and yet, with access to data being restricted for years, little research has been done to date about this platform that could help understand its role in social transformation towards sustainability.

Using a new research tool, CrowdTangle by Facebook, this study takes a closer look at how sustainable fashion is portrayed on Instagram, who talks about it and in which ways. A discourse analysis of multimodal data includes photos and descriptions of public posts and identified the key groups of actors and their framings. This study aims to contribute to a limited research on actors and discourses promoting sustainable fashion on Instagram, as well as its links to wellbeing.

This seminar is open to the public. To join and get the Zoom information, send an email to Sebastien.Lambelet(at)unige.ch.
