Focused on consumption studies and sustainability and with a PhD in Development Studies, Marlyne Sahakian joined the department of Sociology at the University of Geneva in August 2017 as Assistant Professor, with an affiliation to the Institute of Environmental Studies and the Hub/Institute Environmental Governance and Territorial Development (P/IGEDT).


Her research interest is in understanding consumption patterns and practices, in relation to environmental concerns and social equity.  She is currently coordinating several national and international research projects on household energy and food consumption, working with interdisciplinary teams. She is also a founding member of SCORAI Europe, a network supporting sustainable consumption research and action.

She writes regularly for journals in the fields of sociology, sustainability, as well as food and energy consumption. Her recent work includes Keeping Cool in Southeast Asia: energy consumption and urban air-conditioning (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and Food Consumption in the City:  Practices and patterns in urban Asia and the Pacific (Routledge Studies in Food, Society & the Environment, 2016).
