To Succeed With Data Science, First Build the ‘Bridge’

In this article published by the MIT Sloan Management Review, Prof. Diego Kuonen, professor of data science at the Geneva School of Economics and Management; with Dr. Roger W. Hoerl and Thomas C. Redman, propose a way forward to better align data science teams and business teams.

Data science teams often experience difficulties when moving their insights and algorithms into business processes. Similarly, business teams often struggle with articulating the problems they need solved.

A possible way forward is a data science bridge: an organizational structure and leadership commitment to develop better communication, processes, and trust among all stakeholders.

Many companies believe in the value of separating business operations from the data team. But this can create tensions and repercussions. A lack of communication hampers the ability to identify which factory areas need innovation; and poor communication hinders the factory in gaining from lab inventions.
