GSEM working from home: Marta Pittavino, Senior Lecturer

How do GSEM members experience lockdown and telework? Today, Dr. Marta Pittavino, Senior Lecturer, shares her experience:

How is your work going, remotely?

Intense, but quite well. I manage to perform the majority of the activities also from home. However, there is a part of the tasks for which the presence in the office is preferable.

What has the situation changed for you?

In the positive

I can better organize and plan meetings.

In the negative

For the first time, I am supervising students for their Master Thesis and I find it hard and unfortunate to meet them only by Zoom or Skype.

What has been your biggest challenge since the beginning of the lockdown?

The biggest challenge is spending more hours than before in front of a screen. Another challenge lies with the lack of rhythm and structure in days, weeks, and months.

What are the unforeseen benefits?

On a professional level, meetings are more efficient: straight to the point!

On a personal one, I cooked a lot and experimented many recipes.

What do you miss the most? What is your main concern?

I miss personal communications, through human and social interactions.

My main concern is also the lack of dynamism. Teleworking days are more static than usual ones. Moreover, it is strange not having a clear separation between the professional and private spaces: your office is also your home.

What do you like best?

Sleeping a bit more in the morning. And, finally, I have time for cooking!

An advice to cope with confinement ?

Meet people if possible. Go out for a walk, for a run or just lay in the park, and organize events, as if we were in a normal situation. Of course, every advice depends on the specific need of each personality.

What is your current saying ?

My favorite citation: "Live every day as if it was every day. Neither the first nor the last. The only one." - Pablo Neruda

What will you retain after the lockdown?

Efficient meetings, through Zoom, possible even if people are far away (i.e. in another city, country). Keep the organization and fast planning resulted from this period, also later on.

Thank you, Marta !

This year, Dr. Marta Pittavino teaches "Statistical Modelling" and "Forecasting with applications in Business". She also coordinates the Master in Business Analytics.
