Flash funding announced for a research project on Brazil and the New Development Bank

The Global Studies Institute has been awarded funding for a new research project by the Flash Research Programme, managed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne’s (EPFL) Cooperation and Development Center. This new funding allows researchers to quickly react to exceptional events by setting up joint research projects with partners in Brazil and India.

The project, Rule-maker? Brazil and the New Development Bank, is led by Omar Serrano, a postdoctoral researcher at the GSI and the Political Science Department of the University of Geneva in collaboration with Adriana Erthal Abdenur from the BRICS Policy Center (Rio de Janeiro) and Wang Lei from the University of Lucerne. The 14 months’ project will analyse the role of Brazil in the institutional design and funding decisions of the New Development Bank. The launch of the NDB and its funding decisions are relevant inasmuch as the bank represents a rupture in the current governance of global finance, as non-Western countries seek for the first time to design a credible alternative to the World Bank and the IMF.
