Professor Charles Lock gave a lecture on "Pilgrimage: Wandering, to a point" on Wednesday 30 May 2007.



An account of the etymological history and semantic errancy of peregrinatio, followed by consideration of a few literary texts that play between "going towards" and "going around": among them, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, The Journal of George Fox, Defoe's Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Birtain, Melville's Clarel, T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets, Patrick White's Voss and Rudy Wiebe's Playing Dead.
