Numerals and Universal 20

Sarah Ouwayda - Université de Genève

Numerals have been the object of much attention in theoretical linguistics in recent years. This talk brings a new empirical dimension to this theoretical debate by examining the typological predictions of different proposals that have been put forth on status of numerals in the noun phrase.

To do this, Cinque’s (2005) proposal is encoded as a model of as a model of his typological data on the word order in the noun phrase. After this, a computational method (classification) is used to evaluate the proposal’s abilities to predict the data. We then alter and re-evaluate this proposal based on two theories of numerals, the first treating numerals as modifiers, and the second treating numerals as type n elements that can merge only if there is a function that can host them.
